Kathryn Hauser’s Reflection for the Day of Pentecost 19 May 2013
John 14:11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves.
Lord, I am in this same predicament that You were in with Philip and the disciples, when they said to You, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” (Jn 14:8) The Church-as-Institution may or may not believe me that I had a mystical marriage with You, but they could believe me simply because of the multiple volumes of works I have written.
How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? (v 9)
I have written about my journey and shown what our relationship has been like from my mortal shoes. That’s all I have. I need an advocate.
Advocate definition:
verb (used with object)
1. to speak or write in favor of; support or urge by argument; recommend publicly: He advocated higher salaries for teachers.
2. a person who speaks or writes in support or defense of a person, cause, etc. (usually followed by of ): an advocate of peace.
3. a person who pleads for or in behalf of another; intercessor.
4. a person who pleads the cause of another in a court of law.
There are different kinds of advocates. There are legal advocates who try to uphold the law. They are motivated by a spirit of Justice. There are human rights advocates. They are motivated by Dignity. There are science advocates. They are motivated by finding Answers. And the list goes on:
Advocates for the Arts are motivated by Creativity.
Advocates for Business are motivated by Opportunity.
Advocates for Education are motivated by Learning.
Advocates for Family are motivated by Values.
Advocates for Government are motivated by Provision.
Advocates for the Media are motivated by Information.
Advocates for Religion are motivated by Beliefs.
Most of us go forth with good intentions in our motivations. Somewhere along the way, words of Truth get manipulated by the Facts. The world does not see Truth nor recognize it (Jn 14:17), because they are trying to manipulate it for their own purposes. But for those who know the Truth, the Spirit abides within them. (v 17) Advocates on every frontier can preach and teach “until the cows come home” and we’d have educated cows. I learned that from the Institution. And so did the archetypal Church of Laodicea. (Rev 3) Being in the Know does not produce Hospitality. In fact every single one of the Seven Churches from the Book of Revelation was confronted with this same issue. The Kingpin Issue that set apart the archetypal Seven Churches from the rest of the Church-as-Whole-Bride was that they neglected the Spirit of Hospitality. Hospitality is not just about saying the right words. Pentecost, itself, was not just about the anomaly of speaking in tongues (Acts 2:3) (which sounds like confusing babble out of context.) Lord, when You came down to see the Tower of Babel (Gen 11:5), You saw that humanity could do anything we put our minds to (and voices!) (v 6) And we HAVE!
Genesis 11:7 “Come, let us go down, and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”
And the spirit of Confusion scattered us. It had a similar affect on the people on The Day of Pentecost.
Acts 2:12 All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”
Confusion precedes understanding. From the humbling position of confusion, we ask questions. God’s first question to us humans was, “Where are you?” (Gen 3:9) We had thousands of years to scatter out over the face of the earth (v 9) (and to outer space.) Some were filled with the “new wine” of Adventure, but I believe that most were led by the Spirit nonetheless, even though the world does not know Him. (Jn 2:17) The Holy Spirit is not an aimless gypsy, although the Spirit does blow as the Wind.
John 3:8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
Rick Joyner, himself, had said in his ‘Word for the Week’ this week that we are not to be “Christian Gypsies” but we are to “Seek the fresh and honor the established.” Right-O! Since God’s first question to us was “Where are you?” (Gen 3:9) I can honor this and I answer in Truth. I’ve been “out here” parking and praying in my car outside of community in “Solitary Confinement,” because of unfair judgments heaved upon me, even though I followed and obeyed what God had told me to do and say. The flashpoint was the fulfillment of Rev 3:16 on 26 January 2011 and the holy fire spread out from there like wildfire. Because of my obedience to God, I’ve been ramrodded by “ten horns” (Rev 17:3) of ten cycles of the Abomination of Desolation (Dan 9:27) with ten different solitude spots over the course of six years where I’ve parked and prayed, all because the shameful Silence was not broken. This was not Man. This was Satan’s influence. (Rev 13:1) We’ve all made mistakes! We’re forgiven! No one likes to admit when s/he has fallen short of one’s potential and glory. But it happens. I bit the green weenie, too! No one is immune. ‘Fess up! Break the Silence! I belong in the House of the Lord, and not parked in a car. (Mk 13:14) This is NOT about “My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?” God didn’t do this. It is man who has forsaken. So correct the problem.
God’s second question to mankind was “What is this you have done?” (Gen 3:13)
Well, Church? When Jesus spoke to the Seven Churches He did not ask any of them, “What is this you have done?” Why? Because He knew!
Ephesus – Rev 2:2 I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false.
Smyrna – Rev 2:9 I know your afflictions and your poverty—yet you are rich! I know about the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.
Pergamum – Rev 2:13 I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city—where Satan lives.
Thyatira – Rev 2:19 I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first.
………. and on our end: Rev 2:22 … unless they repent of her ways. 23 I will strike her children “dead.” Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.
Sardis – Rev 3:1 “To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.
Philadelphia – Rev 3:8 I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.
Laodicea – Rev 3:15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!
God gave each of us spiritual and temporal gifts to honor Himself and help us to share the Truth with the world; Truth based on SHOWING God’s hospitality to the world, not ramrodding it down each others’ throats. Is not hospitality one of the reasons God gave the gift of the Holy Scriptures to the Jews in the first place? To show God’s hospitality? Plus the Scriptures help us to remember. (Jn 14:26) Scripture comes from God and is fulfilled by beings (human and other and Himself.) And all give Voice to the Creator! We can build towers (Gen 11:5) to Trivial Pursuit® with all the facts we know. And with our language skills (using the same words, I might add! (Gen 11:1)) we can argue a mule into a pit (cf Ex 21), but words won’t get the animal out. If we throw in a little bit of dirt at a time, the donkey has a chance to eventually walk out of a pit on his own. From my experience, the ones listening to the Holy Spirit are the ones who are not burying their mules (or asses.) (cf Mt 8:22) All along this journey Christ has been telling us not to cover our Assets.
Romans 8:16 It is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God.
We ARE children of God! And God is a Gentleman! He tries not to come right out and say directly, “I TOLD YOU SO!” That would be rather…ummm…rude. So He allows us the opportunity to search through Scripture with our minds and hearts to discover what, how, when, where, and through whom He has fulfilled His Word and kept His promises. It is in the heart-mind where the Advocate, the Spirit of Truth, continues to flame passionately in our defense. Our job is to worship God and share the journey.
John 14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.
Today we celebrate God’s “Manifested Breakthrough” in what God is doing through all of us, as Mike Bachelder explains:
“Manifested breakthrough is not just God breaking into a situation from one direction, but it is God placing Himself in the very center of what needs to change and then manifesting His power, presence and glory. It truly is, “If God be for us and who can be against us” (Romans 8:31).”
We all need an advocate at some point in our lives to come to our defense. Just as Peter quoted from Joel 2:28-32 to prove that God was fulfilling prophecy and to show how God was keeping His word, so God is showing us today how He has been fulfilling more prophecy and continues keeping His Word. We just have to ask. But that’s hard for mankind to do. [I’m being polite here, gentlemen. Cough.]
“What is this you have done?” (Gen 3:13)
Prayer: Lord, You have given us the capacity to follow through with the leadings and promptings of the Holy Spirit. You have given us hands, feet, hearts, eyes, ears, minds and spiritual gifts to show the world Your compassion. The world really IS “all together in one place.” (Acts 2:1) We are all right here on this Planet, positioned where You have placed us to be! Sweep over Your creation once again. Holy Spirit, please come in the sound of a rushing spiritual “wind” from Heaven. Crush the spirits of Control, Religiosity, Pride, and Hypocrisy once and for all. Bind us to Your holy self. Fill Your entire “House” where we are sitting. (v 2) Bring on Your Forward Movement! Where we have been divided, make us whole. Where we have been doubtful, make us sure. Where we have been fearful, give us peace. Where we have been confused, give us clarity. Where our courage has been lacking, give us humor. Where we have been misled, give us wisdom. Where we have been judged, give us mercy. Draw us into Your grace. Connect us to the abilities You have already given us to speak each others’ heart languages in Truth and Love. (v 4) Unite us in our devotion to You. (v 5) At this sound of Your rushing Wind, may the gathering crowd no longer be bewildered (v 6) but pour out Your fresh Spirit (v 18) and renew the face of the ground. (Ps 104:30)
Psalm 104:31 May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD rejoice in his works—

Day of Pentecost 19 May 2013 Gospel: John 14:8-17, 25-27
Acts 2:1-21
2:1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.

2:2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.

2:3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them.

2:4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

2:5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem.

2:6 And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each.

2:7 Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?

2:8 And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language?

2:9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,

2:10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,

2:11 Cretans and Arabs–in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.”

2:12 All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”

2:13 But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.”

2:14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say.

2:15 Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning.

2:16 No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

2:17 ‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.

2:18 Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy.

2:19 And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist.

2:20 The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day.

2:21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

Genesis 11:1-9
11:1 Now the whole earth had one language and the same words.

11:2 And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.

11:3 And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar.

11:4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”

11:5 The LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built.

11:6 And the LORD said, “Look, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them.

11:7 Come, let us go down, and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”

11:8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city.

11:9 Therefore it was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.

Psalm 104:24-34, 35b
104:24 O LORD, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.

104:25 Yonder is the sea, great and wide, creeping things innumerable are there, living things both small and great.

104:26 There go the ships, and Leviathan that you formed to sport in it.

104:27 These all look to you to give them their food in due season;

104:28 when you give to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.

104:29 When you hide your face, they are dismayed; when you take away their breath, they die and return to their dust.

104:30 When you send forth your spirit, they are created; and you renew the face of the ground.

104:31 May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD rejoice in his works–

104:32 who looks on the earth and it trembles, who touches the mountains and they smoke.

104:33 I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being.

104:34 May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the LORD.

104:35b Bless the LORD, O my soul. Praise the LORD!

Romans 8:14-17
8:14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.

8:15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!”

8:16 it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

8:17 and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ–if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

John 14:8-17, (25-27)
14:8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.”

14:9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

14:10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works.

14:11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves.

14:12 Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father.

14:13 I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

14:14 If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.

14:15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

14:16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever.

14:17 This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.

14:25 “I have said these things to you while I am still with you.

14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.

14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.
